Dr. Joe Bartges


    Dr. Joe Bartges received his DVM from the University of Georgia in
    1987.After completing a 1 year internship in small animal medicine and
    surgery at the University of Minnesota, he completed a dual residency in
    medicine and nutrition and a PhD from Minnesota in 1993. He was on
    faculty at the University of Georgia before joining the faculty at The
    University of Tennessee in 1997. Currently, he is Professor of Medicine
    and Nutrition and holds the Acree Endowed Chair of Small Animal
    Research. He is board certified in the American College of Veterinary
    Internal Medicine and the American College of Veterinary Nutrition. He
    has spoken at more than 150 meetings, and has published more than 200
    peer-reviewed manuscripts, review articles, scientific abstracts, and
    textbook chapters. He is a member of the editorial boards of 5
    veterinary journals.

    Dr. Bartges' research interests include urinary tract diseases,
    specifically stones, kidney failure, bacterial urinary tract infections,
    and idiopathic cystitis in cats, and nutrition, specifically the role of
    nutrition in management and prevention of disease, obesity, and
    diabetes.

    He received the Norden Distinguished Teacher in 2000 and 2008, the
    Pfizer Excellence in Research Award in 2000, and The University of
    Tennessee National Alumni Outstanding Teacher Award in 2007. He has 5
    children:

    Patrice who is 19, Garrick who is 15, 2 Boxers - Nelle who is 8 and
    Buddy who is 6, and 1 cat - Mr. Bill who is 10. Dr. Bartges was a member
    and chair of Morris Animal Foundation's Scientific Advisory Board and a member of its Happy Healthy Cat Campaign steering committee.
