In Other News... We Can Do Telemedicine

Dr. Jenifer Chatfield & Dr. Jason Chatfield on Pet Life Radio

Telemedicine is not new to the medical field, medical professionals have been doing this since the advent of telephones. A recent study showed that 40% of millennials said that a telemedicine option for healthcare was extremely important.  Millennials now comprise the largest segment of pet owners in the U.S.

As veterinary clinics looked for ways to provide support to their community, many have turned to telemedical consults.  The initial hurdle was to overcome state and federal laws requiring and defining a doctor/patient relationship.  Although state laws still exist today, in March, the FDA’s announced that they would temporality not enforce requirements in order to allow veterinarians to better utilize telemedicine during the coronavirus pandemic.

On today’s show, Dr. Jen and Dr. Jason Chatfield speak with Dr. Aaron Smiley, a practicing veterinarian who has become a rock star in the telemedicine field.  As the Chief of Staff at Devonshire Veterinary Clinic in Anderson, Indiana and Geist Station Animal Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana - he is an active user of veterinary telehealth with his clients and patients. He is also Chief of Staff Advisor at VetCor.

Dr. Aaron Smiley achieved his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from the University of Illinois in 2007. And serves as the President-elect of the Indiana Veterinary Medical Association and is on the Alumni Board for the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine.
