Dr. Ben Colmery graduated from Michigan State University with a B.S. and D.V.M. in 1968.  Following graduation he entered private practice in Ann Arbor Michigan.  Two years later he purchased the practice and developed it into a Certified Hospital by the American Animal Hospital Association.  In 1993 Dr. Colmery sold his hospital and joined the staff of The Animal Medical Center in New York City in charge of dental services.  His Michigan roots were just too strong and he returned in 1995 and joined Michigan Veterinary Specialists. In 2001 he founded the Dixboro Veterinary Dental and Medical Center which is an Accredited Hospital with the American Animal Hospital Association.

Dr. Colmery’s interest in dentistry started shortly after graduation when he realized the oral cavity had been largely ignored in veterinary school.  Too many pets were presented with oral cavity problems that were not covered in lecture or textbooks.  This was the start of a fifty year effort to better understand and treat the oral cavity problems of companion animals. Today companion animal’s dental problems can be effectively dealt with and the animals not suffer needlessly.

During this fifty year period Dr. Colmery was also on the adjunct faculty at Michigan State University treating animals and lecturing to students.  He has co-authored a textbook on veterinary dentistry and published numerous articles and chapters for various journals and textbooks.  In addition he has lectured world wide on dentistry to students, doctors and lay people.  He is a cofounder of the American Veterinary Dental Society, charter Fellow of the Academy of Veterinary Dentistry and charter Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College.  He is a Past President of the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association, American Veterinary Dental Society, Academy of Veterinary Dentistry, and Washtenaw Academy of Veterinary Medicine.  Outside of veterinary medicine he is a Past President of Ann Arbor Western Kiwanis, and has volunteered his time for the National Ski Patrol System and Boy Scouts.
