On the Air with Pit Bull Advocate and Cancer Awareness Crusader Heather Crowe

Arden Moore on Pet Life Radio

Tune into this special Oh Behave episode as host Arden Moore spotlights the dual mission of Heather Crowe.  She is the founder of a nonprofit group called HIT Living Foundation and she is the daughter of a mother named Susie, who is a breast cancer survivor.  Heather shares her group's creative fundraising idea:  she and 11 others posed topless while holding pit bull puppies up for adoption in a 2024 calendar called, Titties for Pitties. Proceeds are being donated to her foundation plus the AiRs Foundation.

BIO:

Founder of the HIT Living Foundation, Heather Crowe founded HIT in 2018 because of a Bahamian Potcake named Kesa who was in need of a forever home. Having graduated from Columbia College of Chicago with a BFA in Art + Design and a Photography minor in 2011, Heather had just shut down her handmade home decor company (realizing she was a better artist than selling her art), recruiting the help of her Bahamian friends and was able to bring Kesa back to L.A.. Kesa was adopted her out to her furever family just three days later. Kesa was the one dog that turned into three, that turned into hundreds.

Drawing images of Noah’s Arch as a child, researching St. Francis and exploring Assisi, Italy, Heather’s passion for animals has always been deep rooted. Engaging in the ability with the help of her incredible team and village to save one dog’s life and change a person’s forever, is something that keeps her heart tank full and soul grateful.

<Arden Moore> Welcome to the Oh Behave show on Pet Life Radio.

00:00:51.700 --> 00:00:53.180
<Arden Moore> I'm your host, Arden Moore.

00:00:53.800 --> 00:00:57.860
<Arden Moore> Now, our special guest today is on a duel mission.

00:00:58.220 --> 00:01:05.160
<Arden Moore> She is champion adoptions of pit bulls and she's combating the big C, cancer.

00:01:05.900 --> 00:01:11.860
<Arden Moore> And as you are about to discover, she's doing it so with a lot of creativity.

00:01:12.180 --> 00:01:19.900
<Arden Moore> Please welcome to our show the founder of HIT Living Foundation, Heather Crowe.

00:01:20.160 --> 00:01:21.400
<Arden Moore> Welcome to our show, Heather.

00:01:21.600 --> 00:01:23.880
<Heather Crowe> Hi, Arden, thank you so much for having me.

00:01:23.900 --> 00:01:25.600
<Heather Crowe> I'm very excited to be here.

00:01:26.140 --> 00:01:27.600
<Arden Moore> This is my favorite part.

00:01:27.960 --> 00:01:30.620
<Arden Moore> I'm not saying the words, you are.

00:01:30.660 --> 00:01:33.360
<Arden Moore> People come up with ideas to raise money.

00:01:33.380 --> 00:01:40.040
<Arden Moore> If you're a 501 3C like your group is, a non-profit, you've got to come up with creativity.

00:01:40.420 --> 00:01:44.220
<Arden Moore> So I'm going to let you tell the zillions of people tuning in.

00:01:45.240 --> 00:01:49.400
<Arden Moore> You've created a 2024 monthly calendar.

00:01:49.580 --> 00:01:49.920
<Heather Crowe> Yes.

00:01:50.860 --> 00:01:51.660
<Arden Moore> Go ahead, Heather.

00:01:51.760 --> 00:01:52.760
<Arden Moore> Tell us what it's called.

00:01:53.180 --> 00:01:55.560
<Heather Crowe> Titled, Titties for Pities.

00:01:56.360 --> 00:02:02.940
<Heather Crowe> I'll let that play on words, just go through your mind so you can imagine what the calendar might feature.

00:02:04.080 --> 00:02:07.260
<Arden Moore> I'm thinking you better keep us all abreast on what's happening.

00:02:07.280 --> 00:02:10.600
<Arden Moore> So titties for pitties.

00:02:10.840 --> 00:02:13.860
<Arden Moore> This show has been on the air since 07.

00:02:14.160 --> 00:02:16.060
<Arden Moore> I have never said that phrase on a show.

00:02:20.880 --> 00:02:24.340
<Arden Moore> So I made sure I didn't wear a plunging neckline today to host the show.

00:02:24.800 --> 00:02:32.120
<Arden Moore> But seriously, as we said at the top of the show, this is because you have a dual mission.

00:02:32.140 --> 00:02:33.340
<Arden Moore> What is your dual mission?

00:02:33.740 --> 00:02:34.340
<Arden Moore> Correct.

00:02:34.380 --> 00:02:34.800
<Heather Crowe> Yes.

00:02:34.900 --> 00:02:44.400
<Heather Crowe> So we had put this campaign together in the fall of 2022 because we had a litter of nine beautiful pit bull puppies we were facing.

00:02:45.040 --> 00:02:47.560
<Heather Crowe> Shockingly, a pretty big challenge to get adopted.

00:02:47.900 --> 00:02:53.500
<Heather Crowe> We had four left of the litter and no matter what we were doing, we were having professional photo shoots.

00:02:53.520 --> 00:02:55.360
<Heather Crowe> We were having other rescue share.

00:02:55.940 --> 00:03:02.880
<Heather Crowe> We were reaching out to our celebrity supporters, influence supporters, and we couldn't find forever homes for these pit bulls.

00:03:03.320 --> 00:03:12.060
<Heather Crowe> My mom is actually a stage three double mastectomy breast cancer survivor.

00:03:12.080 --> 00:03:13.780
<Heather Crowe> Luckily, she's beat it.

00:03:13.800 --> 00:03:14.760
<Heather Crowe> She's a survivor.

00:03:14.760 --> 00:03:15.980
<Heather Crowe> She's still around today.

00:03:16.840 --> 00:03:17.780
<Arden Moore> What is her name?

00:03:18.460 --> 00:03:20.560
<Arden Moore> She needs to hear her name on the air.

00:03:20.840 --> 00:03:22.480
<Heather Crowe> My mom, Susie Crowe.

00:03:22.860 --> 00:03:23.360
<Heather Crowe> Yes.

00:03:23.740 --> 00:03:25.820
<Heather Crowe> Go, Susie.

00:03:25.900 --> 00:03:37.120
<Heather Crowe> I thought, why don't we couple a campaign to get some visibility on the pit bulls paired with Breast Cancer Awareness Month?

00:03:37.420 --> 00:03:40.060
<Heather Crowe> The team that I have, they're amazing.

00:03:40.480 --> 00:03:43.600
<Heather Crowe> They're ready to put their breast photo forward.

00:03:45.200 --> 00:03:58.180
<Heather Crowe> When I had this idea, and I love a good dog pun, I love a good play on words, and so when the idea, titties for pitties, popped into mind and I brought it to the team, everyone was on board.

00:03:59.120 --> 00:04:00.620
<Arden Moore> Well, good, good.

00:04:00.640 --> 00:04:03.040
<Arden Moore> Everyone went braless for you.

00:04:03.180 --> 00:04:04.660
<Arden Moore> Bravo, braless.

00:04:05.940 --> 00:04:07.040
<Heather Crowe> They sure did.

00:04:07.040 --> 00:04:07.460
<Heather Crowe> Yes.

00:04:07.580 --> 00:04:08.560
<Arden Moore> Oh my gosh.

00:04:08.960 --> 00:04:23.200
<Heather Crowe> The campaign started in 2022, and we just shared the images on social media, and we donated the remaining four puppies adoptions donations to an organization called the Ayers Foundation.

00:04:23.220 --> 00:04:35.460
<Heather Crowe> The Ayers Foundation is an organization that offers educational resources and grants to women who have had mastectomies who need help with funding for reconstructive surgery.

00:04:35.480 --> 00:04:47.740
<Heather Crowe> This organization is very near and dear to my heart because my mom had a double mastectomy, and at the time when she had her mastectomy, there was no organization like the Ayers Foundation for her to talk to.

00:04:48.080 --> 00:04:55.700
<Heather Crowe> There was no one for her to go to and talk about reconstructive options, and if there was funding for anything like this.

00:04:55.860 --> 00:05:12.580
<Heather Crowe> Now that there is something today, it was very important to both my mom and me and everyone else on the team agreed, let's really promote this amazing organization because a lot of women out there who've had mastectomies don't know that the Ayers Foundation exists or even is an option for them.

00:05:13.420 --> 00:05:15.180
<Arden Moore> What does Ayers stand for?

00:05:15.200 --> 00:05:16.860
<Arden Moore> Because I think that's important to bring out.

00:05:17.420 --> 00:05:22.620
<Heather Crowe> It stands for, I want to make sure I say it right.

00:05:23.160 --> 00:05:24.220
<Arden Moore> I got it if you don't.

00:05:24.400 --> 00:05:25.620
<Heather Crowe> You don't, please go ahead.

00:05:25.640 --> 00:05:26.420
<Arden Moore> All right.

00:05:26.540 --> 00:05:27.400
<Arden Moore> Drum roll, please.

00:05:27.520 --> 00:05:31.520
<Arden Moore> Alliance in Reconstructive Surgery, Ayers.

00:05:32.660 --> 00:05:33.080
<Arden Moore> All right.

00:05:33.100 --> 00:05:34.300
<Arden Moore> So I think that's important.

00:05:34.520 --> 00:05:39.100
<Arden Moore> I mean, two really important causes you're doing, Heather.

00:05:39.120 --> 00:05:40.120
<Arden Moore> I love pitties.

00:05:40.500 --> 00:05:48.240
<Arden Moore> I say they have meaty cheeks because when they smile, they got the meaty cheeks and they were meaty dogs for goodness sakes.

00:05:48.460 --> 00:05:50.560
<Arden Moore> And let's talk about the pitties first.

00:05:51.500 --> 00:05:53.540
<Arden Moore> Why are you so in love with pitties?

00:05:53.880 --> 00:06:05.200
<Heather Crowe> So there are, and as you see in a lot of major cities in shelters, pitties are predominantly the breed that you will find the most in the shelters.

00:06:05.620 --> 00:06:13.240
<Heather Crowe> And unfortunately, they have a bad stigma that's attached to their name because that's what a lot is talked about.

00:06:13.280 --> 00:06:20.260
<Heather Crowe> And just like any other large breed intelligent dog, they need to be placed in the right hands of responsible ownership.

00:06:20.600 --> 00:06:23.100
<Heather Crowe> And that's for every dog across the board.

00:06:23.200 --> 00:06:23.540
<Arden Moore> Right.

00:06:23.800 --> 00:06:29.400
<Heather Crowe> And so when certain negative things happen that's associated with pit bulls, that's what's broadcasted.

00:06:29.900 --> 00:06:32.920
<Heather Crowe> And unfortunately, it's broadcasted too much.

00:06:33.020 --> 00:06:41.020
<Heather Crowe> And what's not talked about is how loyal pitties are, what great family dogs they are, what wonderful companion dogs they are.

00:06:41.240 --> 00:06:46.740
<Heather Crowe> There are plenty of service pit bulls out there because of their intelligence.

00:06:47.420 --> 00:06:56.640
<Heather Crowe> And we see it, we see them far too often in Los Angeles, and we try and help a lot of pit bulls, especially the puppies, because they're the underdogs.

00:06:56.780 --> 00:07:01.960
<Heather Crowe> And that's what our rescue really focuses on, our underdogs, medical cases.

00:07:02.340 --> 00:07:21.640
<Heather Crowe> And right now what we're seeing a lot in the shelters because of the current crisis, of the overwhelm, of the influx of dogs that are being surrendered to the shelters, the strays on the streets, you know, because the housing market has gone up, the inflation is causing people to have to surrender their animals.

00:07:22.300 --> 00:07:35.300
<Heather Crowe> And mothers and puppies, and a lot of people don't know this in the shelters, but they're the first to be put on the euthanasia list, because the shelters just don't have the resources to care for these puppies if they get sick.

00:07:36.020 --> 00:07:45.160
<Heather Crowe> And you're seeing kennel cough, you're seeing diseases go through the shelters, because they just don't have the resources to keep every dog on a watch to make sure they're healthy.

00:07:45.560 --> 00:07:54.640
<Heather Crowe> So unfortunately, we've actually seen a pit bull mother at Coachella Valley Animal Shelter get put down when she was days away from giving birth.

00:07:54.920 --> 00:08:00.080
<Heather Crowe> We saw another German Shepherd family get euthanized because all the puppies contracted parvo.

00:08:00.100 --> 00:08:04.480
<Heather Crowe> And so this is, of course, a devastating story, but it's not being talked about enough.

00:08:04.500 --> 00:08:06.640
<Heather Crowe> People don't know what's going on.

00:08:07.020 --> 00:08:10.340
<Heather Crowe> And so we've really shifted our focus to mothers and puppies.

00:08:10.620 --> 00:08:19.160
<Heather Crowe> And we actually just brought on a litter of pit mix puppies from Coachella Valley Animal Shelter because they are euthanizing mothers and puppies there.

00:08:19.680 --> 00:08:21.060
<Arden Moore> And here's the irony, Heather.

00:08:21.120 --> 00:08:25.900
<Arden Moore> I mean, we hated COVID, but shelters are almost empty because everybody got a pet.

00:08:26.180 --> 00:08:26.540
<Arden Moore> All right.

00:08:26.620 --> 00:08:28.640
<Arden Moore> What's been the postscript on that?

00:08:29.060 --> 00:08:30.220
<Heather Crowe> The postscript.

00:08:30.380 --> 00:08:33.320
<Heather Crowe> We knew we were going to feel the effect.

00:08:33.800 --> 00:08:38.440
<Heather Crowe> The major blow of the shelters emptying out in 2020.

00:08:38.700 --> 00:08:40.180
<Heather Crowe> And it's been a slow trickle.

00:08:40.260 --> 00:08:45.760
<Heather Crowe> And now it's hit head on and shelters are full, rescues are full.

00:08:46.040 --> 00:09:03.640
<Heather Crowe> The way that we are having to say no to perfectly healthy family friendly dogs on a daily basis because families are moving, they're moving to new homes, apartments, where landlords do not give leases with pets on there.

00:09:03.880 --> 00:09:12.940
<Heather Crowe> Or what we're seeing a lot of in other sectors is that landlords do allow dogs, but there's a weight limit or there's a breed restriction.

00:09:13.360 --> 00:09:17.000
<Heather Crowe> And the number one breed restriction on rental properties are pit bulls.

00:09:17.400 --> 00:09:20.700
<Arden Moore> Geez, what an uphill climb, but you're doing it.

00:09:20.720 --> 00:09:30.320
<Arden Moore> I mean, I want to go back to 2018, because you were in the Bahamas, and I understand there was a little pity.

00:09:30.540 --> 00:09:31.040
<Arden Moore> Kisa?

00:09:31.240 --> 00:09:31.740
<Arden Moore> Kisa?

00:09:31.760 --> 00:09:32.280
<Arden Moore> Is that the right?

00:09:32.500 --> 00:09:32.980
<Arden Moore> Kesa?

00:09:33.220 --> 00:09:33.840
<Arden Moore> Yes.

00:09:33.860 --> 00:09:34.680
<Arden Moore> What does that mean?

00:09:34.700 --> 00:09:37.080
<Arden Moore> Do you know that name, K-E-S-A?

00:09:37.440 --> 00:09:44.260
<Heather Crowe> It was a female extended version of a male dog that friends of mine in the Bahamas had, and his name was Kes.

00:09:44.980 --> 00:09:50.580
<Arden Moore> Now, I've been to the Bahamas, and you and I both know they're not called dogs there.

00:09:50.600 --> 00:09:51.580
<Arden Moore> What are they called?

00:09:51.940 --> 00:10:06.300
<Heather Crowe> They're called pot cakes, and they're called pot cakes by the locals because the local dish down here is peas, beans and rice, and whatever is left caked at the bottom of the pot, the locals feed to the dogs.

00:10:06.760 --> 00:10:07.880
<Heather Crowe> So they're called pot cakes.

00:10:08.500 --> 00:10:09.760
<Arden Moore> They lick that pot clean.

00:10:10.180 --> 00:10:13.860
<Arden Moore> So you were in the Bahamas, you saw this dog, a pot cake.

00:10:14.060 --> 00:10:14.420
<Heather Crowe> Yes.

00:10:14.740 --> 00:10:15.540
<Arden Moore> What was going on?

00:10:15.560 --> 00:10:16.700
<Arden Moore> What were you doing back then?

00:10:16.720 --> 00:10:20.420
<Arden Moore> Because I don't think HIV Living Foundation was organized yet.

00:10:20.820 --> 00:10:21.860
<Heather Crowe> No, it was not.

00:10:21.860 --> 00:10:22.220
<Heather Crowe> No.

00:10:22.400 --> 00:10:24.580
<Heather Crowe> I was down in the Bahamas on a vacation.

00:10:25.220 --> 00:10:29.380
<Heather Crowe> And the house next to the house we were renting had all of these barking dogs.

00:10:29.780 --> 00:10:32.240
<Heather Crowe> And of course, I had to go over and say hi to the dogs.

00:10:32.560 --> 00:10:35.660
<Heather Crowe> And they had asked me, Oh, you're from Los Angeles.

00:10:36.060 --> 00:10:41.800
<Heather Crowe> Do you know anyone who might be interested in adopting this pot cake we rescued about a month ago?

00:10:42.400 --> 00:10:44.360
<Heather Crowe> She came to us emaciated.

00:10:44.420 --> 00:10:46.300
<Heather Crowe> She had cuts all over her body.

00:10:46.320 --> 00:10:47.820
<Heather Crowe> She was only about 10 months old.

00:10:48.180 --> 00:10:49.280
<Heather Crowe> They rehabbed her.

00:10:49.700 --> 00:10:53.600
<Heather Crowe> And at the time, I had been volunteering at a rescue in Los Angeles.

00:10:53.620 --> 00:10:54.580
<Heather Crowe> And I said, You know what?

00:10:54.960 --> 00:10:57.180
<Heather Crowe> I feel like I've got a pretty good network in LA.

00:10:57.200 --> 00:10:59.940
<Heather Crowe> Let's bring her back to Los Angeles and I'll see what I can do.

00:11:00.580 --> 00:11:04.300
<Heather Crowe> So logistically, it was it was intense.

00:11:04.320 --> 00:11:09.700
<Heather Crowe> It was an intense process to get her from the Bahamas because she couldn't just go in a carry on on the plane.

00:11:09.720 --> 00:11:14.760
<Heather Crowe> We had to put her and so we first put her on a puddle jumper from the Bahamas to Florida.

00:11:14.780 --> 00:11:19.260
<Heather Crowe> And then she went in cargo from Fort Lauderdale to Los Angeles.

00:11:19.280 --> 00:11:19.680
<Heather Crowe> Wow.

00:11:19.700 --> 00:11:24.280
<Heather Crowe> And you know, I just shared on social media and she got adopted in three days.

00:11:24.300 --> 00:11:25.080
<Heather Crowe> I couldn't believe it.

00:11:25.900 --> 00:11:32.260
<Heather Crowe> And at the time I had looked at my husband and I said, you know, I think we can do this.

00:11:32.280 --> 00:11:36.220
<Heather Crowe> I think we can help one dog from the Bahamas at a time, find a forever home.

00:11:36.580 --> 00:11:38.920
<Heather Crowe> And he said, OK, you know, let's try it.

00:11:39.560 --> 00:11:47.880
<Heather Crowe> And then that's when I quickly quickly it was logistically very intense process and incredibly expensive.

00:11:48.120 --> 00:11:50.860
<Heather Crowe> So I said, OK, let's let's maybe put a pause on that.

00:11:51.160 --> 00:11:56.540
<Heather Crowe> And I shifted focus to the shelters in Los Angeles and the surrounding counties.

00:11:56.680 --> 00:11:59.940
<Heather Crowe> And boy, did I learn a lot in one year.

00:12:00.600 --> 00:12:01.920
<Arden Moore> What what what do you mean?

00:12:01.940 --> 00:12:05.200
<Arden Moore> Your group is called HIT Living Foundation.

00:12:05.220 --> 00:12:06.400
<Arden Moore> What does that stand for?

00:12:06.420 --> 00:12:07.700
<Arden Moore> Because I don't want to get hurt.

00:12:10.040 --> 00:12:10.900
<Heather Crowe> No need to die.

00:12:11.720 --> 00:12:14.520
<Heather Crowe> HIT is an acronym for Honesty, Integrity, Trust.

00:12:15.800 --> 00:12:23.200
<Heather Crowe> And I feel like HIT Living is a lifestyle choice that each one of us has the opportunity to live by each and every day.

00:12:23.540 --> 00:12:29.280
<Heather Crowe> And I really wanted to implement those ethos in the practice of the nonprofit that I was starting.

00:12:29.780 --> 00:12:31.460
<Arden Moore> And you're an artist, correct?

00:12:31.540 --> 00:12:34.080
<Heather Crowe> Yes, an artist by nature.

00:12:34.220 --> 00:12:39.360
<Heather Crowe> And I have my BFA in art and design and a minor in photography.

00:12:39.420 --> 00:12:44.720
<Heather Crowe> So that really helped putting our website together, creating content marketing.

00:12:45.020 --> 00:12:45.620
<Arden Moore> That's cool.

00:12:45.980 --> 00:12:47.180
<Arden Moore> So, okay.

00:12:47.380 --> 00:12:48.720
<Arden Moore> Titties for pitties.

00:12:49.040 --> 00:12:49.400
<Heather Crowe> Yes.

00:12:49.420 --> 00:12:50.200
<Arden Moore> I've said it now.

00:12:50.260 --> 00:12:51.560
<Arden Moore> I've said it.

00:12:51.580 --> 00:12:55.820
<Arden Moore> How is that set up and how did you get 12 brave women or do you have a dude in there?

00:12:58.220 --> 00:13:02.320
<Heather Crowe> So the only dude in the shoot was our photographer, Morgan.

00:13:02.760 --> 00:13:03.820
<Arden Moore> Oh, okay.

00:13:03.840 --> 00:13:05.560
<Arden Moore> He's very happy with that assignment, I'm sure.

00:13:07.920 --> 00:13:12.820
<Heather Crowe> He was very happy, but I have to say he was incredibly patient with our team.

00:13:13.380 --> 00:13:31.480
<Heather Crowe> As much as the women on the team were very eager to get on board because shockingly enough to me, everyone, pretty much majority of everyone who stepped forward had been affected by breast cancer through their grandmother or their mother or a friend or someone they knew.

00:13:31.880 --> 00:13:42.920
<Heather Crowe> And it wasn't just 10, 15 years ago that they knew someone, it was just a few years ago, or our executive director, her best friend is currently going through breast cancer and she's in her 30s.

00:13:43.980 --> 00:13:44.360
<Heather Crowe> Yes.

00:13:44.580 --> 00:13:48.120
<Heather Crowe> And so a lot of women were saying, I want to get involved in this.

00:13:48.360 --> 00:13:51.520
<Heather Crowe> Obviously, of course, everyone on the team is here for the dogs.

00:13:51.940 --> 00:13:57.060
<Heather Crowe> But a lot of the women wanted to get on board because they wanted to promote the Aris Foundation.

00:13:57.080 --> 00:14:02.660
<Heather Crowe> They want to promote breast cancer awareness because this is a subject that means a lot to them.

00:14:03.100 --> 00:14:08.740
<Heather Crowe> And so it was a little difficult getting 12 of us together for one shoot.

00:14:08.760 --> 00:14:10.400
<Heather Crowe> So we had to stagger it a little bit.

00:14:10.420 --> 00:14:22.280
<Heather Crowe> We used some of the photos from 2022 and it was through the support of our community that we had actually had a few people reach out and say, you know, you should really turn this into a fundraising calendar.

00:14:22.680 --> 00:14:25.260
<Arden Moore> Well, hey, everyone, we're speaking with Heather Crowe.

00:14:25.260 --> 00:14:27.960
<Arden Moore> She's with the group HIT Living Foundation.

00:14:28.220 --> 00:14:34.360
<Arden Moore> She's got a calendar you got to get your paws on for 2024 is called Tiddies for Pity's Monthly Calendar.

00:14:34.520 --> 00:14:37.380
<Arden Moore> We're going to dive in more about that after we take this break.

00:14:37.400 --> 00:14:39.340
<Arden Moore> So, Sid, stay.

00:14:39.780 --> 00:14:40.640
<Arden Moore> We'll be right back.

00:14:44.040 --> 00:14:46.940
<Announcer> Time for a walk on the red carpet, of course.

00:14:47.280 --> 00:14:50.920

<Announcer> We're back from the lodge.

00:15:54.740 --> 00:15:57.580
<Announcer> Just check the paper and we had r record showing at the box.

00:15:57.780 --> 00:15:59.240
<Announcer> The letter box, that is.

00:15:59.400 --> 00:16:01.240
<Announcer> Now back to Oh Behave.

00:16:01.380 --> 00:16:02.060
<Announcer> Here is Arden.

00:16:03.060 --> 00:16:06.080
<Arden Moore> Welcome back to the Oh Behave Show on Pet Life Radio.

00:16:06.100 --> 00:16:07.440
<Arden Moore> I'm your host, Arden Moore.

00:16:07.700 --> 00:16:10.480
<Arden Moore> I am speaking with a great crusader.

00:16:10.720 --> 00:16:12.200
<Arden Moore> Her name is Heather Crowe.

00:16:12.600 --> 00:16:20.140
<Arden Moore> She heads up the HIT, H-I-T Living Foundation, hitlivingfoundation.org after the show, dash over there.

00:16:21.000 --> 00:16:23.220
<Arden Moore> And she is doing her part with her team.

00:16:23.480 --> 00:16:34.580
<Arden Moore> They're a 5013C nonprofit to help dogs, pit bulls get adopted, and also to help combat breast cancer and by making people more aware.

00:16:35.300 --> 00:16:38.400
<Arden Moore> And you've got this calendar, so you got one a month.

00:16:38.620 --> 00:16:39.440
<Arden Moore> What month are you?

00:16:40.680 --> 00:16:42.380
<Heather Crowe> I am my birthday month, November.

00:16:42.400 --> 00:16:45.240
<Arden Moore> Oh, what's your birthday in November?

00:16:45.260 --> 00:16:46.420
<Heather Crowe> November 24th.

00:16:47.000 --> 00:16:49.180
<Arden Moore> Oh, your day before my sister Deb.

00:16:49.840 --> 00:16:51.900
<Arden Moore> So related to Deb.

00:16:52.200 --> 00:16:52.580
<Heather Crowe> Yeah.

00:16:52.740 --> 00:16:54.800
<Arden Moore> So I haven't seen the calendar yet.

00:16:55.340 --> 00:16:57.280
<Arden Moore> How are you posed, dressed?

00:16:57.300 --> 00:16:58.820
<Arden Moore> I mean, do you have a dog with you?

00:17:01.180 --> 00:17:07.400
<Heather Crowe> So when you talk about the calendar, titties for pitties, the question does come to mind.

00:17:07.940 --> 00:17:13.740
<Heather Crowe> You know, is there exposure and they're unfortunately for those inquisitive minds, there is not.

00:17:13.780 --> 00:17:21.460
<Heather Crowe> We are all posing in jeans and topless, but we have a pitbull puppy covering us.

00:17:22.480 --> 00:17:24.280
<Arden Moore> Strategically positioned.

00:17:24.300 --> 00:17:27.160
<Heather Crowe> They were very strategically positioned.

00:17:27.180 --> 00:17:27.520
<Heather Crowe> Yes.

00:17:27.540 --> 00:17:29.020
<Arden Moore> I hope you trim their nails.

00:17:32.680 --> 00:17:42.360
<Heather Crowe> I can see like, ow, ow, ow, you know, actually the puppies were a little more docile.

00:17:42.360 --> 00:17:47.980
<Heather Crowe> I think because they just weren't used to being held for so long in front of flashing lights.

00:17:48.540 --> 00:17:50.700
<Heather Crowe> So they just kind of stared on it.

00:17:50.820 --> 00:17:55.940
<Heather Crowe> You know, they weren't as lively as we had, you know, hoped they would be for their big debut.

00:17:56.320 --> 00:17:56.720
<Arden Moore> Right.

00:17:56.960 --> 00:18:01.020
<Arden Moore> Well, they're probably like a little bit, really, I can get away with this.

00:18:02.840 --> 00:18:05.040
<Arden Moore> So who was the pity you had?

00:18:05.060 --> 00:18:06.360
<Arden Moore> Do you remember the name of the puppy?

00:18:06.840 --> 00:18:07.780
<Heather Crowe> I do not.

00:18:07.900 --> 00:18:08.480
<Heather Crowe> I do not.

00:18:08.500 --> 00:18:10.560
<Arden Moore> What kind of markings did the pity have?

00:18:11.520 --> 00:18:12.340
<Heather Crowe> The tan.

00:18:12.520 --> 00:18:14.060
<Heather Crowe> It was a tan, yes.

00:18:15.000 --> 00:18:17.920
<Arden Moore> So how do people get this calendar?

00:18:17.940 --> 00:18:18.980
<Arden Moore> What's the easiest way?

00:18:19.000 --> 00:18:27.440
<Arden Moore> Because, you know, January, we got to start the 2024 off on the right paw and get our hands on the titties for pitties calendar.

00:18:27.460 --> 00:18:28.100
<Arden Moore> How do we do that?

00:18:28.120 --> 00:18:28.940
<Heather Crowe> Absolutely.

00:18:29.240 --> 00:18:32.900
<Heather Crowe> So actually this year is our five year anniversary.

00:18:33.340 --> 00:18:34.340
<Arden Moore> Congratulations.

00:18:34.500 --> 00:18:35.740
<Heather Crowe> Thank you very much.

00:18:35.760 --> 00:18:38.940
<Heather Crowe> Yes, it's a big milestone for us.

00:18:40.060 --> 00:18:43.920
<Heather Crowe> And we are celebrating our fifth year anniversary.

00:18:43.940 --> 00:18:46.400
<Heather Crowe> We've set a goal to raise $55,555.

00:18:48.520 --> 00:18:56.280
<Heather Crowe> Which will help us recoup some funds that we have spent on medical cases and board and train cases this year.

00:18:56.300 --> 00:19:12.800
<Heather Crowe> And then also it will give us an opportunity to keep going to shelters and pulling at-risk dogs, which we actually thought by this point in the year, we thought we were going to need to take a break based on our budget.

00:19:13.160 --> 00:19:18.520
<Heather Crowe> But we had a pretty successful Giving Tuesday, which we were so grateful about.

00:19:18.640 --> 00:19:21.940
<Heather Crowe> And that actually allowed us to go to the shelter.

00:19:21.960 --> 00:19:26.300
<Heather Crowe> And just this past week, our team, our team is really, they're amazing.

00:19:26.320 --> 00:19:30.300
<Heather Crowe> I have to give a shout out to the team, but we brought on 18 puppies in one week.

00:19:30.700 --> 00:19:32.960
<Heather Crowe> They definitely have their paws full right now.

00:19:32.960 --> 00:19:36.080
<Heather Crowe> But we were able to do that based on the Giving Tuesday funds.

00:19:36.100 --> 00:19:41.740
<Heather Crowe> So we're asking for a $55 donation, a minimum of $55 donation for the calendar.

00:19:41.900 --> 00:19:48.800
<Heather Crowe> And when you donate, whether it's through PayPal, Zelle, Venmo, or through our website, just leave your address and we'll make sure we get a calendar to you.

00:19:49.280 --> 00:19:52.980
<Arden Moore> Well, I did order one, so I'm going to get one to support you all.

00:19:53.420 --> 00:19:54.720
<Arden Moore> I can't wait to see it.

00:19:54.740 --> 00:19:55.400
<Arden Moore> I'm joking.

00:19:55.420 --> 00:19:58.140
<Arden Moore> Now, this is your fifth year campaign, right?

00:19:58.620 --> 00:19:59.680
<Arden Moore> Titties for pitties.

00:19:59.760 --> 00:20:00.120
<Arden Moore> All right.

00:20:00.160 --> 00:20:03.480
<Arden Moore> I was just thinking, here's just an idea for the sixth year.

00:20:03.500 --> 00:20:04.140
<Arden Moore> You ready for it?

00:20:04.420 --> 00:20:04.880
<Heather Crowe> Tell me.

00:20:04.900 --> 00:20:05.840
<Heather Crowe> Oh, I'm so ready.

00:20:06.120 --> 00:20:10.000
<Arden Moore> Get some comedians and do a fundraiser.

00:20:10.040 --> 00:20:11.660
<Arden Moore> And it could be Giddy for pitties.

00:20:12.000 --> 00:20:13.220
<Heather Crowe> Giddy for pitties.

00:20:15.580 --> 00:20:17.440
<Heather Crowe> OK, I like where this is going.

00:20:17.660 --> 00:20:25.560
<Heather Crowe> I like where this is going because the team had the idea for next year, for our next year's calendar is bellies for bullies.

00:20:27.800 --> 00:20:29.420
<Heather Crowe> Well, we've got some ideas.

00:20:29.440 --> 00:20:29.960
<Heather Crowe> We're going.

00:20:30.380 --> 00:20:35.480
<Arden Moore> Now, if you ever transition to cats, you could be titties for kitties.

00:20:39.380 --> 00:20:44.800
<Arden Moore> I mean, I don't know about holding, but yeah, make sure their nails have been trimmed.

00:20:45.060 --> 00:20:48.660
<Arden Moore> And unlike a little pit puppy, kitties have flexible spines.

00:20:49.000 --> 00:20:49.840
<Heather Crowe> Yes, they do.

00:20:49.860 --> 00:20:51.720
<Heather Crowe> I can only imagine those photos.

00:20:51.740 --> 00:20:54.140
<Heather Crowe> There would definitely be a few nip slips here and there.

00:20:54.620 --> 00:20:56.740
<Arden Moore> How long did the shoot take for you guys?

00:20:56.880 --> 00:20:59.720
<Arden Moore> And what's some of your favorite memories of that?

00:20:59.740 --> 00:21:12.080
<Arden Moore> Because you're bonding with your teammates on this and you're helping save lives both for pitties and also for people like your mom that got the diagnosis of breast cancer.

00:21:12.340 --> 00:21:13.060
<Heather Crowe> Absolutely.

00:21:13.080 --> 00:21:39.860
<Heather Crowe> I think, you know, just to start off, because this was really the most important and memorable moment for me, but I know a lot of the other team members who were there, it was very special being there with my mom, who told me she later confided in me that, and I know she wouldn't mind me sharing this story, but only three men in her life have seen her topless since her double mastectomy 17 years ago.

00:21:40.280 --> 00:21:43.940
<Heather Crowe> One was her surgeon who performed her double mastectomy.

00:21:44.260 --> 00:21:48.500
<Heather Crowe> The second one was the surgeon who performed her reconstructive surgery.

00:21:49.000 --> 00:21:53.640
<Heather Crowe> And the third man was Morgan, the photographer of the shoot, who was very professional.

00:21:54.540 --> 00:21:57.040
<Heather Crowe> And she said he made her feel very comfortable.

00:21:57.480 --> 00:22:07.340
<Heather Crowe> And so my mom really, she was a little nervous about doing the shoot, especially in front of all the other girls who none of us have ever been affected by breast cancer before.

00:22:07.620 --> 00:22:19.360
<Heather Crowe> But just after my mom was speaking to the girls, hearing about the other women in their lives who have been affected by breast cancer, it put just, you know, a coat of armor on my mom and she went there and she owned the shoot.

00:22:19.660 --> 00:22:20.660
<Arden Moore> What month is she?

00:22:20.780 --> 00:22:22.240
<Heather Crowe> She's May, her birthday month.

00:22:22.840 --> 00:22:23.260
<Arden Moore> All right.

00:22:23.580 --> 00:22:24.920
<Heather Crowe> And it was way to go, Susie.

00:22:25.260 --> 00:22:25.620
<Heather Crowe> Yes.

00:22:25.880 --> 00:22:33.740
<Heather Crowe> At one point, her puppy was way down on her breast and Morgan kept telling her, you know, Susie, you've got to lift the dog up.

00:22:33.760 --> 00:22:38.520
<Heather Crowe> And Susie said, you know, Morgan, I have no feeling in my breast, so you got to help me out here.

00:22:38.880 --> 00:22:41.620
<Arden Moore> Well, you know, they do say something like, you know, lift those pups up.

00:22:45.160 --> 00:22:46.740
<Heather Crowe> Yes, exactly.

00:22:46.760 --> 00:22:47.000
<Heather Crowe> Yep.

00:22:47.420 --> 00:22:48.820
<Heather Crowe> So it was very special.

00:22:48.840 --> 00:22:53.320
<Heather Crowe> It was a really incredible bonding experience for the team.

00:22:53.960 --> 00:23:00.460
<Heather Crowe> Hearing everybody's stories, how they've been impacted by breast cancer, having my mom there, a survivor, owned the shoot.

00:23:00.480 --> 00:23:01.240
<Heather Crowe> She did great.

00:23:01.260 --> 00:23:03.600
<Heather Crowe> She was so happy to be a participant of it.

00:23:04.160 --> 00:23:21.580
<Heather Crowe> And we later heard, you know, someone reached out to us and said they're currently undergoing breast cancer, and they had no idea about the Aris Foundation, and they are scheduled for a mastectomy, and they will be reaching out to the Aris Foundation to talk about it, see what options are available for them.

00:23:21.620 --> 00:23:24.640
<Heather Crowe> And so that's, you know, that's really the point about this campaign.

00:23:24.660 --> 00:23:30.600
<Heather Crowe> It was to get some visibility on these puppies, help promote a wonderful organization like the Aris Foundation.

00:23:31.180 --> 00:23:33.900
<Heather Crowe> And you know, it's certainly been a talking point.

00:23:34.120 --> 00:23:35.960
<Arden Moore> So how are you getting the word out?

00:23:36.100 --> 00:23:37.660
<Arden Moore> Tell us some of the key sites.

00:23:38.080 --> 00:23:40.340
<Arden Moore> I guess the LA media has been all over it.

00:23:40.360 --> 00:23:40.760
<Heather Crowe> Yes.

00:23:40.780 --> 00:23:41.080
<Heather Crowe> Yeah.

00:23:41.260 --> 00:23:42.320
<Heather Crowe> It's been wonderful.

00:23:42.340 --> 00:23:46.600
<Heather Crowe> LA magazine did a piece on Titties for Pitties.

00:23:46.900 --> 00:23:48.960
<Heather Crowe> We're promoting it through our social media.

00:23:49.260 --> 00:23:52.900
<Heather Crowe> There's a big account on Instagram called Free the Nipple.

00:23:53.480 --> 00:23:58.360
<Heather Crowe> And of course there is.

00:23:58.640 --> 00:23:59.900
<Heather Crowe> Oh, yes, there is.

00:24:00.040 --> 00:24:05.080
<Heather Crowe> Oh, yes, they were very happy to help promote and advocate for this campaign.

00:24:05.100 --> 00:24:06.120
<Heather Crowe> It's been great.

00:24:06.200 --> 00:24:07.220
<Heather Crowe> It's really been great.

00:24:07.240 --> 00:24:11.800
<Heather Crowe> We've been having the calendar at a lot of our in-person adoption events.

00:24:12.300 --> 00:24:16.120
<Heather Crowe> And it's just been it's been really well received by the community.

00:24:16.180 --> 00:24:20.820
<Heather Crowe> People definitely get on board for a very creative way to promote.

00:24:21.560 --> 00:24:25.380
<Arden Moore> Well, you know, these kinds of calendars have an appeal.

00:24:25.820 --> 00:24:32.240
<Arden Moore> I'm thinking about traditionally, there's always been the beefy firefighters that do the calendars, right?

00:24:32.600 --> 00:24:35.280
<Arden Moore> And what's why there's a firefighter that's a chick.

00:24:35.580 --> 00:24:40.620
<Arden Moore> But move over firefighters, you got hoses, you got, you got pennies.

00:24:42.980 --> 00:24:44.020
<Heather Crowe> And they're cute.

00:24:44.160 --> 00:24:49.080
<Arden Moore> You should go over to the fire department and say, you need to support our new calendar.

00:24:49.400 --> 00:24:50.100
<Heather Crowe> Exactly.

00:24:50.460 --> 00:24:52.060
<Heather Crowe> A little cross promotion here.

00:24:52.080 --> 00:24:52.660
<Heather Crowe> I like that.

00:24:52.920 --> 00:24:53.640
<Arden Moore> Oh my gosh.

00:24:53.720 --> 00:24:55.560
<Arden Moore> How did you fall in love with animals?

00:24:56.140 --> 00:25:06.700
<Heather Crowe> Oh, I have been like this ever since I was a little girl, whether it's been birds, dogs, cats, I mean, any animal under the sun.

00:25:06.720 --> 00:25:09.980
<Heather Crowe> I do have to confess, I have a deep phobia of snakes.

00:25:10.540 --> 00:25:15.660
<Arden Moore> Well, you're in the Bahamas and according to my research, there are no venomous snakes in the Bahamas.

00:25:15.960 --> 00:25:16.940
<Heather Crowe> That is correct.

00:25:17.080 --> 00:25:17.960
<Heather Crowe> That is correct.

00:25:17.980 --> 00:25:18.340
<Heather Crowe> Yes.

00:25:18.360 --> 00:25:18.780
<Heather Crowe> I'm very...

00:25:18.800 --> 00:25:20.000
<Arden Moore> There are hurricanes though.

00:25:21.100 --> 00:25:21.720
<Arden Moore> Dorian.

00:25:23.180 --> 00:25:23.580
<Heather Crowe> Yes.

00:25:23.660 --> 00:25:24.120
<Heather Crowe> Yes.

00:25:24.500 --> 00:25:29.700
<Heather Crowe> The community we actually live in, in the Bahamas was decimated by Dorian.

00:25:30.360 --> 00:25:39.520
<Heather Crowe> I was down there seven days after the hurricane and what I did down there was a lot of the locals would not leave their dogs there.

00:25:40.180 --> 00:25:48.240
<Heather Crowe> They had opportunities to fly out to Nassau and to the States if they had their passports, but none of the airlines would allow them to bring their dogs with them.

00:25:48.740 --> 00:25:51.260
<Heather Crowe> They wouldn't leave, but their houses were in shambles.

00:25:51.460 --> 00:25:56.720
<Heather Crowe> They had no access to water because there was very little supplies coming in.

00:25:56.880 --> 00:25:59.020
<Heather Crowe> They had no access to electricity.

00:25:59.440 --> 00:26:03.620
<Heather Crowe> It was close to 100 degrees every day, but they would not leave their dogs.

00:26:03.640 --> 00:26:16.860
<Heather Crowe> So what I did is in our little community, Treasure Key, I went around to the homeowners who were still there and I took their dogs and I flew them over to Florida and another rescue in Florida called Big Dog Ranch Rescue.

00:26:17.320 --> 00:26:19.200
<Arden Moore> Oh, yeah, that's in Palm Beach County.

00:26:19.440 --> 00:26:19.880
<Arden Moore> Yes.

00:26:19.900 --> 00:26:21.520
<Heather Crowe> Yeah, we work very closely with them.

00:26:21.540 --> 00:26:22.480
<Heather Crowe> They're wonderful.

00:26:22.840 --> 00:26:36.380
<Heather Crowe> They housed their dogs for six months and some dogs they even housed for a year, depending on how long it took the owners to rebuild and to get back to a life where they could bring their dogs back.

00:26:36.600 --> 00:26:37.760
<Arden Moore> What a nice thing.

00:26:37.820 --> 00:26:39.340
<Arden Moore> What a nice thing all of you've done.

00:26:39.580 --> 00:26:44.220
<Arden Moore> Years ago, I was a newspaper reporter in South Florida and lived in Palm Beach County.

00:26:44.280 --> 00:26:46.140
<Arden Moore> I'm very aware of that organization.

00:26:46.160 --> 00:26:47.420
<Arden Moore> It's a great organization.

00:26:47.440 --> 00:26:53.240
<Arden Moore> Hey, we're about to say goodbye because you're awesome, but I know you got to go save some pitties and others.

00:26:53.500 --> 00:26:58.400
<Arden Moore> Again, name the websites, how people can get a calendar and where to find it.

00:26:58.900 --> 00:26:59.620
<Heather Crowe> Absolutely.

00:26:59.920 --> 00:27:15.260
<Heather Crowe> hitlivingfoundation.org and if you go under Donate and under Fifth Year Anniversary Campaign, please make a $55 plus donation and make sure to leave your address in the notes so we know where to send a calendar.

00:27:15.280 --> 00:27:18.240
<Arden Moore> Hey everybody, we've been speaking with Heather Crowe.

00:27:18.240 --> 00:27:19.380
<Arden Moore> She's a great gal.

00:27:19.400 --> 00:27:20.520
<Arden Moore> She's helping pets.

00:27:21.040 --> 00:27:27.080
<Arden Moore> She's honoring her mom, a cancer survivor, and you survived being on the show with me.

00:27:27.100 --> 00:27:28.240
<Arden Moore> What do you think Heather?

00:27:28.640 --> 00:27:29.500
<Heather Crowe> Easy, easy.

00:27:29.520 --> 00:27:31.140
<Heather Crowe> I could do this all day with you.

00:27:31.160 --> 00:27:32.920
<Heather Crowe> It's been so much fun.

00:27:32.940 --> 00:27:36.340
<Arden Moore> So remember, Giddy for Pity's coming up, right?

00:27:36.360 --> 00:27:38.100
<Arden Moore> And get some comedians from LA.

00:27:38.280 --> 00:27:38.900
<Arden Moore> What do you think?

00:27:39.300 --> 00:27:42.120
<Heather Crowe> I think we can get them on board.

00:27:45.180 --> 00:27:48.500
<Arden Moore> I also want to do a shout out to my producer, Mark Winter.
