<Arden Moore> Welcome to the Oh Behave show on Pet Life Radio.

00:00:51.640 --> 00:00:53.140
<Arden Moore> I'm your host, Arden Moore.

00:00:53.720 --> 00:01:00.160
<Arden Moore> Now, every one of us tuning in right now have had what we call that heart dog.

00:01:00.620 --> 00:01:05.080
<Arden Moore> You know, the dog who inspires, it motivates us to be better humans.

00:01:05.280 --> 00:01:09.260
<Arden Moore> For our special guest today, the heart dog was named Moose.

00:01:09.700 --> 00:01:16.240
<Arden Moore> Although his life was cut short by cancer, his legacy and purpose lives on.

00:01:16.740 --> 00:01:20.520
<Arden Moore> Please welcome to our show the founder of a nonprofit group.

00:01:20.560 --> 00:01:25.280
<Arden Moore> It's called Moose's March, the incredible Tricia Montgomery.

00:01:25.540 --> 00:01:26.860
<Arden Moore> Welcome to our show, Tricia.

00:01:27.400 --> 00:01:29.060
<Tricia Montgomery> Oh, Arden, thank you for having me.

00:01:29.220 --> 00:01:32.740
<Tricia Montgomery> And yes, Moose was my heart dog.

00:01:32.960 --> 00:01:38.780
<Arden Moore> Well, folks, her name is familiar because she is a top dog in the pet industry.

00:01:38.780 --> 00:01:43.180
<Arden Moore> She's been involved in a lot of different missions and campaigns and purposes.

00:01:43.940 --> 00:01:45.320
<Arden Moore> And this one's a big one.

00:01:45.340 --> 00:01:54.780
<Arden Moore> This one, she's on a mission to help us do things to maybe prevent, maybe detect early the big C, cancer.

00:01:55.100 --> 00:01:59.060
<Arden Moore> So tell us a little bit about Moose's March, Tricia.

00:01:59.420 --> 00:02:00.040
<Tricia Montgomery> Sure.

00:02:00.220 --> 00:02:03.380
<Tricia Montgomery> First of all, Arden, an honor and a pleasure to be with you today.

00:02:03.400 --> 00:02:04.540
<Tricia Montgomery> Thank you so much.

00:02:05.820 --> 00:02:12.620
<Tricia Montgomery> Moose's March was named, is named after my dog, Moose, who passed away of stage four lymphoma.

00:02:13.100 --> 00:02:14.640
<Tricia Montgomery> Moose was my heart dog.

00:02:15.800 --> 00:02:22.320
<Tricia Montgomery> I adopted him from Paws Humane Society before the pandemic when I was CEO for Paws.

00:02:22.940 --> 00:02:25.580
<Tricia Montgomery> And he really, he was beside me.

00:02:25.600 --> 00:02:26.520
<Tricia Montgomery> He was my glue.

00:02:26.560 --> 00:02:28.700
<Tricia Montgomery> He was that dog.

00:02:29.660 --> 00:02:40.740
<Tricia Montgomery> And I had come home from an event in Talladega, I thought about three days, came home and wrapped my arms around him and was snuggling him.

00:02:40.740 --> 00:02:42.480
<Tricia Montgomery> And I thought, oh my goodness.

00:02:44.420 --> 00:02:47.180
<Tricia Montgomery> He had four nodes underneath his neck.

00:02:47.560 --> 00:02:55.940
<Tricia Montgomery> And as I began to pat him down, like we as humans do, and we do with our own dogs too, he had three more nodes.

00:02:56.340 --> 00:02:57.700
<Tricia Montgomery> And they were large.

00:02:57.720 --> 00:02:58.380
<Arden Moore> That was fast.

00:02:58.520 --> 00:02:59.520
<Arden Moore> That was fast.

00:02:59.980 --> 00:03:01.120
<Tricia Montgomery> Yeah, they were fast.

00:03:01.140 --> 00:03:07.720
<Tricia Montgomery> And my dog, Center Kennedy, had said to me, hey, he's kind of feeling a little, he's not playing as much.

00:03:07.740 --> 00:03:08.920
<Tricia Montgomery> He's kind of laying around.

00:03:08.940 --> 00:03:09.340
<Tricia Montgomery> He misses you.

00:03:09.360 --> 00:03:14.520
<Tricia Montgomery> He misses you, and that's what she thought it was, but she did note that for me, Arden.

00:03:15.220 --> 00:03:18.440
<Tricia Montgomery> And I think that's kind of what keyed me in.

00:03:18.460 --> 00:03:21.740
<Tricia Montgomery> And then all of a sudden the nodes and then I knew what they were.

00:03:21.760 --> 00:03:22.880
<Tricia Montgomery> I knew what they were.

00:03:23.160 --> 00:03:26.740
<Tricia Montgomery> And he was gone within like two and a half, three weeks.

00:03:26.880 --> 00:03:27.540
<Tricia Montgomery> He was gone.

00:03:27.560 --> 00:03:37.960
<Tricia Montgomery> And yeah, out of my grief, and I will tell you from my grief, I've never had a grief like that before in my life ever.

00:03:38.480 --> 00:03:48.880
<Tricia Montgomery> I think everything that had happened recently, whether it was my father had passed away, my mom had passed away the year before, and then Moose passed away, and just lost.

00:03:49.500 --> 00:03:54.900
<Tricia Montgomery> I have never experienced a grief like that before in my life.

00:03:55.920 --> 00:04:01.420
<Tricia Montgomery> And luckily, I was able to talk to people and really pick myself up off the floor.

00:04:01.440 --> 00:04:04.780
<Tricia Montgomery> And when I say off the floor, I mean literally off the floor.

00:04:05.600 --> 00:04:07.340
<Tricia Montgomery> And I thought we can do something.

00:04:08.040 --> 00:04:14.040
<Tricia Montgomery> And I think I'm going to give a shout out to my beautiful sister Cheryl for helping me come up with Moose's March.

00:04:14.760 --> 00:04:18.520
<Tricia Montgomery> But we came up with Moose's March first as a program last year.

00:04:19.180 --> 00:04:23.660
<Tricia Montgomery> And this year it is, we are our own 501c3 organization.

00:04:23.680 --> 00:04:29.260
<Tricia Montgomery> This is my passion, this is my project, and this is all about a legacy for Moose.

00:04:29.280 --> 00:04:33.680
<Tricia Montgomery> We focus Arden on the early detection of pet cancer.

00:04:34.000 --> 00:04:39.860
<Arden Moore> And that is so amazing because you could have just crawled under a rock.

00:04:39.880 --> 00:04:47.180
<Arden Moore> And I know I can sense that this is extremely hard, but you're putting forefront.

00:04:47.240 --> 00:04:52.540
<Arden Moore> What can I do with the legacy of Moose, maybe to help somebody else, right?

00:04:52.800 --> 00:04:55.160
<Arden Moore> And that's kind of the best way to be a human.

00:04:56.540 --> 00:04:58.980
<Tricia Montgomery> It was, and it was hard.

00:04:59.140 --> 00:05:00.080
<Tricia Montgomery> It was really hard.

00:05:00.100 --> 00:05:06.520
<Tricia Montgomery> There were, I will go back to this because I think for your audience, we don't talk about cancer enough.

00:05:06.540 --> 00:05:14.500
<Tricia Montgomery> Maybe we don't know to talk about grief enough, but I was on the floor and I did not want, I didn't want to go on.

00:05:14.520 --> 00:05:21.760
<Tricia Montgomery> I mean, I've never, and I've had a lot, you know me, I've had lots of dogs before and never had a pain like that before.

00:05:22.460 --> 00:05:24.960
<Tricia Montgomery> And that just was so deep inside me.

00:05:25.180 --> 00:05:43.040
<Tricia Montgomery> And out of that came, you know, out of the grief has come this beautiful legacy to him and for hope and for quality of life and for touching other people and letting them know it's okay to talk about cancer, that there is hope, that there is quality.

00:05:43.060 --> 00:05:44.000
<Tricia Montgomery> Let's talk about this.

00:05:44.020 --> 00:05:46.360
<Tricia Montgomery> Let's talk about how do you understand a veterinarian?

00:05:46.380 --> 00:05:48.560
<Tricia Montgomery> How do you, is there an early detection?

00:05:48.580 --> 00:05:49.380
<Tricia Montgomery> Is there a test?

00:05:49.500 --> 00:05:51.240
<Tricia Montgomery> Is there something that we can do?

00:05:51.880 --> 00:05:54.420
<Tricia Montgomery> And knowledge is key, and education.

00:05:54.740 --> 00:05:59.860
<Arden Moore> Well before we step into that part, I do want people to get a little sense of Moose.

00:05:59.880 --> 00:06:01.100
<Arden Moore> He was a pity, right?

00:06:01.280 --> 00:06:03.220
<Arden Moore> And he was not a giant pity.

00:06:03.240 --> 00:06:13.520
<Arden Moore> And I'll pit bulls, they have meaty cheeks, because when they're over the clock on May Day Cheeks, and you know, nanny dogs.

00:06:13.540 --> 00:06:17.600
<Arden Moore> So you're at an event, aren't you back then right before COVID?

00:06:17.740 --> 00:06:19.860
<Arden Moore> And you met this dog and tell us.

00:06:19.880 --> 00:06:34.000
<Tricia Montgomery> Yeah, so I had lost my dog Zeus to Cushing's disease, the year before, and I had become CEO for Plagi Maine Society, gone to Columbus, Georgia, didn't know a soul didn't know anyone.

00:06:34.100 --> 00:06:37.880
<Tricia Montgomery> And everyone's like, Oh, you should have thought you know, I'm not ready, I'm not ready.

00:06:38.360 --> 00:07:05.520
<Tricia Montgomery> My birthday weekend, March 29, like right as the pandemic was happening, a dog came in from Columbus Animal Care and Control, and he had come in with his brothers, he had been chained outside, he was skinny as a rail, his ribs were protruding, his legs were like all over the back like pattywampus and like, you know, and he was like this hot mess dog.

00:07:05.860 --> 00:07:15.340
<Tricia Montgomery> It was a Saturday morning and I'm like, um, this is the worst birthday ever, the worst birthday ever, happy birthday to me, and I'm like, I'm going to foster.

00:07:15.340 --> 00:07:18.720
<Tricia Montgomery> And then I had to get approved through our foster coordinator.

00:07:18.760 --> 00:07:25.180
<Tricia Montgomery> And so luckily, they pulled some strings and I got to take Moose home with me and brought him home with me.

00:07:25.200 --> 00:07:29.060
<Tricia Montgomery> And I was kind of in an empty apartment because my furniture was still in Chicago.

00:07:29.080 --> 00:07:30.000
<Arden Moore> Oh no.

00:07:30.080 --> 00:07:33.400
<Tricia Montgomery> It's a scenario that I can't make it up.

00:07:33.820 --> 00:07:43.920
<Tricia Montgomery> And I think I went to the store and I bought a steak and I brought us some food and I'm like, we're just gonna have some wine, you know, this dog and I, although the moose didn't drink anything, but I did.

00:07:44.460 --> 00:07:48.880
<Tricia Montgomery> And he spent the weekend with me and we just had a beautiful time.

00:07:49.300 --> 00:07:50.660
<Tricia Montgomery> He was heartworm positive.

00:07:51.020 --> 00:07:55.960
<Tricia Montgomery> And so we couldn't really walk as much, but we hung out and then we snuggled.

00:07:55.980 --> 00:08:00.100
<Tricia Montgomery> We watched television and there was just this love and I'm like, I'm not ready.

00:08:00.120 --> 00:08:00.780
<Tricia Montgomery> I'm not ready.

00:08:00.800 --> 00:08:02.000
<Tricia Montgomery> I'm not ready to adopt yet.

00:08:02.380 --> 00:08:03.460
<Tricia Montgomery> And I brought him back.

00:08:03.720 --> 00:08:04.140
<Arden Moore> Of course.

00:08:04.160 --> 00:08:07.800
<Tricia Montgomery> And we placed him back into the runs.

00:08:08.260 --> 00:08:13.260
<Tricia Montgomery> And then of course, throughout the day, I'm like, oh, I'm just going to go back, you know, I'm just going to go back.

00:08:13.280 --> 00:08:16.720
<Tricia Montgomery> And then I'm like, I like sat and then they found me in the corner with them.

00:08:16.740 --> 00:08:18.400
<Tricia Montgomery> They're like, why don't you just adopt him?

00:08:18.420 --> 00:08:20.040
<Tricia Montgomery> And so I adopted him.

00:08:20.060 --> 00:08:23.460
<Tricia Montgomery> It was in the during the Abyssal Clear the Shelters event.

00:08:24.060 --> 00:08:29.120
<Tricia Montgomery> And shout out thanks Kathy Bissell for all you do for animal welfare organizations.

00:08:30.000 --> 00:08:34.300
<Tricia Montgomery> I adopted him and he was my glue, Arden.

00:08:35.060 --> 00:08:37.080
<Tricia Montgomery> He had a lot of health issues.

00:08:37.440 --> 00:08:40.260
<Tricia Montgomery> Again going back to that heartworm positive diagnosis.

00:08:41.240 --> 00:08:46.360
<Tricia Montgomery> He had other, he had a heart kind of a little heart murmur and some different things like that.

00:08:46.900 --> 00:08:54.300
<Tricia Montgomery> A lot of skin issues, but he was this dog that just endeared himself to everyone.

00:08:54.700 --> 00:09:02.460
<Tricia Montgomery> He went to work with me every day and as an animal welfare organization during that time, you are an essential worker.

00:09:02.520 --> 00:09:03.740
<Tricia Montgomery> I was an essential worker.

00:09:03.760 --> 00:09:08.100
<Tricia Montgomery> I worked seven days a week, probably 10, 12 hours, 14 hours a day.

00:09:08.120 --> 00:09:09.580
<Tricia Montgomery> And he was with me.

00:09:09.600 --> 00:09:15.360
<Tricia Montgomery> He was in the office and he would like jump on me at like seven o'clock, six thirty, like, hey, it's time to go.

00:09:15.380 --> 00:09:18.900
<Tricia Montgomery> You know, walked in, you know, and he was just part of my life.

00:09:19.180 --> 00:09:23.100
<Tricia Montgomery> When I say he never left my side, he never left my side.

00:09:24.040 --> 00:09:25.500
<Tricia Montgomery> And just everything.

00:09:25.500 --> 00:09:26.560
<Tricia Montgomery> He loved The Bachelor.

00:09:26.580 --> 00:09:27.540
<Tricia Montgomery> He had his favorites.

00:09:27.560 --> 00:09:29.800
<Tricia Montgomery> We would talk about those.

00:09:30.780 --> 00:09:33.240
<Tricia Montgomery> I've never had a dog like that in all my life.

00:09:33.500 --> 00:09:35.860
<Tricia Montgomery> I don't think I've ever had a dog like that.

00:09:35.980 --> 00:09:38.000
<Tricia Montgomery> And slept with me.

00:09:38.020 --> 00:09:43.380
<Tricia Montgomery> I mean, everything I ate, he ate salmon, you know, Brussels sprouts, broccoli.

00:09:43.400 --> 00:09:44.660
<Tricia Montgomery> He ate like a king.

00:09:44.680 --> 00:09:51.920
<Tricia Montgomery> I home cooked for him, you know, and he he was it and just the snuggles and the love.

00:09:52.300 --> 00:09:56.440
<Arden Moore> That is a heart dog and people tuning in know what we're talking about.

00:09:57.180 --> 00:10:01.040
<Arden Moore> And I'm glad that you're doing something in his legacy.

00:10:01.580 --> 00:10:11.640
<Arden Moore> And we're going to talk about some ways that just the impact of cancer in dogs may surprise you folks, as well as some ways we can do with early detection.

00:10:11.980 --> 00:10:17.460
<Arden Moore> There is an organization Volition Veterinary we're going to get into, but we're going to take a quick break.

00:10:17.480 --> 00:10:19.040
<Arden Moore> So you all know the drill.

00:10:19.160 --> 00:10:22.360
<Arden Moore> We got to sit, stay, we'll be right back.

00:10:25.760 --> 00:10:28.660

00:11:44.740 --> 00:11:47.520
<Arden Moore> Welcome back to the Oh Behave Show on Pet Life Radio.

00:11:47.640 --> 00:11:49.000
<Arden Moore> I'm your host, Arden Moore.

00:11:49.020 --> 00:11:50.760
<Arden Moore> We're speaking with Tricia Montgomery.

00:11:51.100 --> 00:11:53.460
<Arden Moore> She is the founder of Moose's March.

00:11:53.480 --> 00:12:03.320
<Arden Moore> Now after the show, please go to Moose's, it's moosesmarch.com.

00:12:03.340 --> 00:12:06.940
<Arden Moore> And there's a lot of great things on that site and ways that you can help.

00:12:07.340 --> 00:12:12.360
<Arden Moore> But Tricia, we never know when we're given an angel and you were given a four-legged angel.

00:12:12.960 --> 00:12:15.600
<Arden Moore> He's up in heaven saying, you go, you go.

00:12:15.660 --> 00:12:19.440
<Arden Moore> Now he's probably channeling his personal pick for The Bachelor.

00:12:19.500 --> 00:12:20.040
<Arden Moore> I don't know.

00:12:20.060 --> 00:12:21.420
<Arden Moore> We don't want to get into any of that.

00:12:21.800 --> 00:12:23.180
<Arden Moore> But I hate cancer.

00:12:23.460 --> 00:12:27.520
<Arden Moore> We hate cancer if it affects any two-leggers, three-leggers or four-leggers.

00:12:27.540 --> 00:12:35.260
<Arden Moore> So just what would surprise people in doing your learning about cancer and trying to create this nonprofit?

00:12:36.160 --> 00:12:40.400
<Arden Moore> Cancer in pets, tell us about how surprisingly prevalent it is.

00:12:40.840 --> 00:12:47.920
<Tricia Montgomery> First of all, two-leg, my father had passed away of cancer from many forms of cancer.

00:12:48.420 --> 00:12:50.300
<Tricia Montgomery> So it does, it impacts us all.

00:12:50.320 --> 00:12:58.120
<Tricia Montgomery> But I think for what was surprising to me, Arden, was I didn't know how many animals were impacted by cancer.

00:12:58.160 --> 00:13:07.480
<Tricia Montgomery> Six million, I think, and if you look at the numbers, 54% of senior dogs, eight plus have that chances increase up to 54% more.

00:13:08.780 --> 00:13:16.840
<Tricia Montgomery> The breeds that get cancer as well, more prevalent breeds of German shepherds, of golden retrievers.

00:13:17.280 --> 00:13:18.420
<Tricia Montgomery> It's amazing to me.

00:13:18.700 --> 00:13:23.820
<Tricia Montgomery> But the thing that I also found amazing is cancer is not exclusive.

00:13:24.220 --> 00:13:35.700
<Tricia Montgomery> It's very inclusive, whether it's hemangiocerecoma, or if it's Moose passed away of stage IV lymphoma, breast cancer, all these different things in the different cancers.

00:13:36.000 --> 00:13:38.060
<Tricia Montgomery> I had no idea.

00:13:38.600 --> 00:13:48.820
<Tricia Montgomery> And then I think as I got more into my knowledge and understanding more about cancer, that how important early detection is.

00:13:49.160 --> 00:13:54.960
<Tricia Montgomery> Because if you catch it soon enough, the two words that we talk about are hope and quality of life.

00:13:55.440 --> 00:13:55.820
<Arden Moore> Right.

00:13:56.320 --> 00:14:03.720
<Arden Moore> Now, it's my understanding in dogs that there are three most common types of cancer.

00:14:03.740 --> 00:14:04.800
<Arden Moore> Do you remember those?

00:14:04.820 --> 00:14:07.480
<Arden Moore> Or I can tip you off if you need it.

00:14:08.080 --> 00:14:08.460
<Tricia Montgomery> No.

00:14:09.100 --> 00:14:09.480
<Arden Moore> Go ahead.

00:14:10.040 --> 00:14:10.540
<Tricia Montgomery> No, no, no.

00:14:11.420 --> 00:14:11.820
<Tricia Montgomery> Go ahead.

00:14:12.120 --> 00:14:13.100
<Arden Moore> Well, let's go through it.

00:14:13.120 --> 00:14:13.920
<Arden Moore> Skin cancer.

00:14:13.940 --> 00:14:15.360
<Tricia Montgomery> Skin cancer, correct.

00:14:16.700 --> 00:14:17.740
<Arden Moore> And breast cancer.

00:14:18.040 --> 00:14:24.420
<Arden Moore> So I guess I was surprised in research that skin cancer is the most common found in dogs.

00:14:24.940 --> 00:14:26.200
<Arden Moore> Were you surprised by that?

00:14:26.400 --> 00:14:27.800
<Tricia Montgomery> I was very surprised by that.

00:14:27.840 --> 00:14:33.740
<Tricia Montgomery> I certainly was because when you think about skin cancer, you don't think about its prevalence within an animal.

00:14:33.860 --> 00:14:37.020
<Tricia Montgomery> You think about it more for a human as opposed to an animal.

00:14:37.040 --> 00:14:39.880
<Tricia Montgomery> Because how can an animal, you know, he's got covered in fur.

00:14:41.720 --> 00:14:43.280
<Tricia Montgomery> So yes, absolutely.

00:14:43.800 --> 00:14:47.120
<Tricia Montgomery> Another cancer that's very prevalent and it's coming more.

00:14:47.140 --> 00:14:54.640
<Tricia Montgomery> And then I think we also need to think about why is, are we just learning and finding out more about cancer?

00:14:55.120 --> 00:14:58.820
<Tricia Montgomery> Or is there something that's within the environment perhaps?

00:14:58.960 --> 00:15:00.500
<Tricia Montgomery> Is there a toxicity?

00:15:00.520 --> 00:15:01.520
<Tricia Montgomery> Is it within our food?

00:15:01.540 --> 00:15:02.580
<Tricia Montgomery> Is it within the toys?

00:15:02.860 --> 00:15:05.540
<Tricia Montgomery> What is causing this cancer?

00:15:05.620 --> 00:15:07.360
<Tricia Montgomery> And how do we deflect that?

00:15:07.420 --> 00:15:08.940
<Tricia Montgomery> What do we do about that?

00:15:09.620 --> 00:15:19.260
<Tricia Montgomery> One thing that I'm finding out more about, and I don't know if it's the timing, but I'm finding out more about hemangiocerecoma that I had no idea about.

00:15:19.780 --> 00:15:25.400
<Tricia Montgomery> And I just had a friend, Rhonda Siegel, her dog Riken just passed away, hemangiocerecoma.

00:15:25.800 --> 00:15:28.220
<Tricia Montgomery> You know, Steve Dale, his dog Ethel passed away.

00:15:28.240 --> 00:15:28.860
<Tricia Montgomery> And there's so many.

00:15:29.140 --> 00:15:32.200
<Tricia Montgomery> And that's a sudden cancer as well that one day they're fine.

00:15:32.220 --> 00:15:37.060
<Tricia Montgomery> And then it's really just a tumor, a bleed out that's just devastating, devastating.

00:15:37.480 --> 00:15:45.080
<Arden Moore> So with this, your organization is all about trying to educate us about early detection and prevention.

00:15:45.800 --> 00:15:50.240
<Arden Moore> So how does Volition Veterinary play a role in all this?

00:15:50.380 --> 00:15:52.740
<Arden Moore> And can you give us some tips on what we can do?

00:15:53.200 --> 00:15:54.560
<Arden Moore> I teach pet first aid.

00:15:54.620 --> 00:16:00.160
<Arden Moore> I teach everybody in my classes, Zoom and in person, how to do a head to tail assessment.

00:16:00.180 --> 00:16:01.600
<Arden Moore> And I do it on my dog, Kona.

00:16:02.100 --> 00:16:09.600
<Arden Moore> And we're doing this once a week because we're trying to catch anything, any changes early and report it to our vet.

00:16:09.620 --> 00:16:13.640
<Arden Moore> So Kona is my good safety dog and she gets head to tail.

00:16:13.840 --> 00:16:16.660
<Arden Moore> We're smelling her breath, looking at our ears, feeling.

00:16:17.020 --> 00:16:20.960
<Arden Moore> So it sounds like that's something we need to do just on a regular basis.

00:16:21.400 --> 00:16:23.580
<Arden Moore> But I'm spitting aloud at you, Tricia.

00:16:24.280 --> 00:16:26.460
<Arden Moore> Who the hell is Volition Veterinary?

00:16:26.480 --> 00:16:28.300
<Arden Moore> How are they working with Moose's March?

00:16:28.660 --> 00:16:32.540
<Tricia Montgomery> So Volition Veterinary is one of our amazing partners and sponsors.

00:16:32.560 --> 00:16:36.260
<Tricia Montgomery> They are all about early detection of pet cancer.

00:16:36.460 --> 00:16:40.160
<Tricia Montgomery> And what that means is right now it is for canines only.

00:16:40.600 --> 00:16:45.760
<Tricia Montgomery> They are introducing a white paper that's coming out next year on felines.

00:16:46.500 --> 00:16:54.840
<Tricia Montgomery> It is a new in you Q testing and people can go to volitionveterinary.com and find out more information.

00:16:54.860 --> 00:17:01.460
<Tricia Montgomery> But it is an actual blood test that you can include within your pets regular checkup.

00:17:01.920 --> 00:17:06.640
<Tricia Montgomery> And it does the markers for pet cancer.

00:17:07.420 --> 00:17:11.180
<Tricia Montgomery> I'm not a veterinarian so I do not want to go into the specifics of that.

00:17:11.620 --> 00:17:17.340
<Tricia Montgomery> But there are specific markets that can detect early detection that can detect cancer.

00:17:17.360 --> 00:17:25.200
<Arden Moore> So you're saying like we recommend everyone to get an annual exam with our dogs and ideally twice a year if they're seniors.

00:17:25.620 --> 00:17:30.260
<Arden Moore> Little Emma, my dog, she's four, she goes in Thursday for her annual exam.

00:17:30.660 --> 00:17:41.520
<Arden Moore> So when there is a blood test, what can we do to educate our veterinarians about maybe doing some more parts of it to get those maybe markers that could indicate cancer?

00:17:42.240 --> 00:17:42.660
<Tricia Montgomery> Sure.

00:17:42.680 --> 00:17:47.940
<Tricia Montgomery> I think that right now that I know they're working with with IDEX and other manufacturers as well.

00:17:48.400 --> 00:17:51.440
<Tricia Montgomery> But it is available through your veterinary office.

00:17:51.520 --> 00:17:59.020
<Tricia Montgomery> You would need to ask for it and say that you do want an early detection test, the new Q test from Volition Veterinary.

00:17:59.680 --> 00:18:02.480
<Tricia Montgomery> How we are working at Moose's March.

00:18:03.020 --> 00:18:15.460
<Tricia Montgomery> We are working with shelters across the country and providing tests specifically for shelters to provide for people that do not maybe have the resources.

00:18:16.300 --> 00:18:28.680
<Tricia Montgomery> What is so important to me that I that I think that Moose gave to me as well as working at Paul Jermain Society, it was in an underserved area.

00:18:28.960 --> 00:18:32.680
<Tricia Montgomery> It was not in a, you know, northern shelters.

00:18:32.700 --> 00:18:38.560
<Tricia Montgomery> Obviously, we had pit bulls and it wasn't the most highest level of income areas.

00:18:38.880 --> 00:18:53.620
<Tricia Montgomery> What I believe Moose really taught me is that everyone is deserving of an animal no matter what you look like, no matter your race, no matter your income level because our pets give so much to us.

00:18:54.360 --> 00:19:02.840
<Tricia Montgomery> What we want to do at Moose's March is to make sure that this test is available and accessible for everyone.

00:19:03.160 --> 00:19:08.680
<Tricia Montgomery> No matter what your income level is, we want to make sure that we're able to provide that to them.

00:19:08.680 --> 00:19:11.240
<Tricia Montgomery> So again, we're working with shelters across the country.

00:19:11.680 --> 00:19:19.800
<Tricia Montgomery> In 2024, we will be having a grant that goes out to select shelters as well to help them out.

00:19:20.020 --> 00:19:20.740
<Tricia Montgomery> Thank you.

00:19:21.240 --> 00:19:30.700
<Tricia Montgomery> I'm excited to help out with testing and also with specific cases of people who may not be able to afford care for their pets for cancer.

00:19:31.140 --> 00:19:33.540
<Tricia Montgomery> The board that we have right now, Dr.

00:19:33.560 --> 00:19:42.620
<Tricia Montgomery> Thomas Butera, CEO of Alician Veterinary, Kristen Wurman of Zoetis Base Paws, Becky Mosser, Appalachian State College.

00:19:42.640 --> 00:19:45.240
<Tricia Montgomery> She's the coordinator of NAVTA, RVT.

00:19:45.240 --> 00:19:46.460
<Tricia Montgomery> She is MPA.

00:19:46.480 --> 00:19:47.760
<Tricia Montgomery> She's just my heart.

00:19:48.600 --> 00:19:48.740
<Tricia Montgomery> Dr.

00:19:48.760 --> 00:19:55.020
<Tricia Montgomery> Rayann Van Pelt, she was one of my veterinarians from Chicago Veterinary Medical Association.

00:19:55.040 --> 00:19:56.860
<Tricia Montgomery> She was with Family Pet Animal Hospital.

00:19:57.120 --> 00:20:00.540
<Tricia Montgomery> Now she works with an organization called Cooperative Care Coalition.

00:20:00.940 --> 00:20:07.840
<Tricia Montgomery> And then David Levy, who's with Pet Product Innovations and just an icon within the pet industry and more.

00:20:07.960 --> 00:20:08.700
<Tricia Montgomery> And just work.

00:20:09.000 --> 00:20:13.680
<Arden Moore> You have assembled a pet posse to take on cancer.

00:20:13.760 --> 00:20:15.040
<Arden Moore> That's pretty amazing.

00:20:15.860 --> 00:20:22.320
<Arden Moore> And I know earlier in November, because this show was airing in December, you actually did a webinar.

00:20:22.360 --> 00:20:24.580
<Arden Moore> Let's talk about pet cancer.

00:20:25.220 --> 00:20:27.660
<Arden Moore> And I have a feeling that's not the last.

00:20:28.020 --> 00:20:29.400
<Tricia Montgomery> I think you're right about that.

00:20:29.540 --> 00:20:34.740
<Tricia Montgomery> We had an overwhelming response to it, Arden, and people want to know more.

00:20:34.760 --> 00:20:39.860
<Tricia Montgomery> The questions that we've gotten, the people that want to know more in specifics about early detection.

00:20:40.800 --> 00:20:52.580
<Tricia Montgomery> Part of that webinar was we had someone on from the Association of Pet Loss and Bereavement, Colin Rowland as the executive director and Nina Papazian, phenomenal group.

00:20:52.920 --> 00:20:58.280
<Tricia Montgomery> And we don't talk about grief enough and how we deal with that.

00:20:58.720 --> 00:20:59.960
<Tricia Montgomery> We also had Dr.

00:20:59.980 --> 00:21:02.240
<Tricia Montgomery> David Stansfield from Cooperative Care.

00:21:02.260 --> 00:21:10.760
<Tricia Montgomery> And what Cooperative Care Coalition does is it bridges the gap between the practitioner and the client.

00:21:11.000 --> 00:21:11.840
<Tricia Montgomery> How do you talk?

00:21:12.040 --> 00:21:12.840
<Tricia Montgomery> What do you do?

00:21:12.860 --> 00:21:13.740
<Tricia Montgomery> What do I say?

00:21:13.760 --> 00:21:17.520
<Tricia Montgomery> What if I, you know, all these things that we feel uncomfortable with.

00:21:17.540 --> 00:21:19.980
<Tricia Montgomery> So we were able to really talk about that.

00:21:20.000 --> 00:21:25.980
<Tricia Montgomery> And there is more coming up for Moose's March in 2024 for the anniversary of his birthday.

00:21:26.000 --> 00:21:32.580
<Tricia Montgomery> And as of his passing, we are hosting marches across the country and people can be involved.

00:21:33.340 --> 00:21:36.620
<Tricia Montgomery> They can go to our website and see more information on that.

00:21:36.620 --> 00:21:38.200
<Tricia Montgomery> But it is about giving back.

00:21:38.220 --> 00:21:39.600
<Tricia Montgomery> We're a 501C3.

00:21:39.780 --> 00:21:50.960
<Tricia Montgomery> All of that donations, full transparency goes to help people and pets and shelters across the country, helping to fight early detection of pet cancer and giving hope.

00:21:51.140 --> 00:21:53.380
<Arden Moore> And go ahead and give that website again for people.

00:21:53.620 --> 00:21:55.560
<Tricia Montgomery> That is moosesmarch.com.

00:21:55.580 --> 00:22:01.700
<Tricia Montgomery> That's M-O-O-S-E-S, March, march.com, moosesmarch.com.

00:22:02.240 --> 00:22:03.860
<Arden Moore> So what can we do?

00:22:03.880 --> 00:22:05.900
<Arden Moore> We talk about early detection.

00:22:06.280 --> 00:22:13.160
<Arden Moore> So from your perspective, what are a few tips you can give pet parents for kind of keeping their eyes open?

00:22:13.540 --> 00:22:20.460
<Tricia Montgomery> Arden, I think what you're doing right now on your podcast and with your first aid courses is teaching people how to do that well check.

00:22:20.680 --> 00:22:22.160
<Tricia Montgomery> How important that is.

00:22:22.180 --> 00:22:27.840
<Tricia Montgomery> I also think regular veterinary checkups are incredibly important.

00:22:27.860 --> 00:22:33.840
<Tricia Montgomery> That relationship that you establish with your veterinarian is so important.

00:22:34.560 --> 00:22:43.980
<Tricia Montgomery> As your pet gets older and you're talking, you know, six, seven, eight years old, make sure that you get your dog tested for early detection.

00:22:44.000 --> 00:22:46.240
<Tricia Montgomery> Make sure that he is detected for pet cancer.

00:22:46.640 --> 00:23:00.540
<Tricia Montgomery> If you have a breed that is prone to pet cancer, get them detected early, include an early detection test as part of your normal testing that you get with your veterinarian.

00:23:00.560 --> 00:23:03.100
<Tricia Montgomery> I think that is so vital right now.

00:23:03.700 --> 00:23:13.300
<Tricia Montgomery> Our goal is to try and eliminate pet cancer and to try to obviously give a type of quality of life because if there is a diagnosis, what do you do?

00:23:13.560 --> 00:23:20.600
<Tricia Montgomery> And the earlier that you can detect cancer and pet cancer, the better off that you and your pet are going to be.

00:23:20.960 --> 00:23:27.240
<Arden Moore> Well, there are treatment options, but I guess the rate of success depends on a lot of factors.

00:23:27.260 --> 00:23:31.080
<Arden Moore> But what are some things that are being done on dogs now to help treat cancer?

00:23:31.280 --> 00:23:32.440
<Tricia Montgomery> I think it's done different ways.

00:23:32.460 --> 00:23:33.880
<Tricia Montgomery> I think there's chemotherapy.

00:23:33.940 --> 00:23:38.820
<Tricia Montgomery> I think there's, you know, there's even prednisone to take them out of a little bit of that misery.

00:23:38.840 --> 00:23:46.300
<Tricia Montgomery> If they're not an option, if chemotherapy is not an option, there is surgery that they can remove a cancer, a tumor or a cell.

00:23:47.060 --> 00:23:51.680
<Tricia Montgomery> There are people that have talked about diets and being able to turn things around.

00:23:51.700 --> 00:23:58.540
<Tricia Montgomery> I think if you you can go to a holistic veterinarian or you can go, you know, Or an integrative maybe.

00:23:58.600 --> 00:23:59.540
<Tricia Montgomery> Integrative, correct.

00:23:59.740 --> 00:24:02.000
<Tricia Montgomery> It runs the full gamut and the full scope.

00:24:02.340 --> 00:24:05.120
<Tricia Montgomery> We do have to think about toxicity, though, Arden.

00:24:05.380 --> 00:24:10.160
<Tricia Montgomery> For years, we have talked about what goes into our pet's mouth.

00:24:10.500 --> 00:24:11.400
<Tricia Montgomery> What are the food?

00:24:11.420 --> 00:24:12.800
<Tricia Montgomery> What's the food that we're feeding?

00:24:13.000 --> 00:24:15.040
<Tricia Montgomery> You know, what are these high quality diets?

00:24:15.620 --> 00:24:19.960
<Tricia Montgomery> We have not talked about what are our pets chewing on?

00:24:20.380 --> 00:24:29.360
<Tricia Montgomery> What about the nylons and the plastics and all these things that are going into their tummies from, you know, from some of those particles that may be chipping off?

00:24:29.560 --> 00:24:32.960
<Tricia Montgomery> I think it was wearethecure.org, and I'll send you the link.

00:24:32.980 --> 00:24:41.680
<Tricia Montgomery> You want to include this, but they gave a complete report out on some of the toys and some of the items that are specifically harmful to our pets.

00:24:41.700 --> 00:24:44.300
<Tricia Montgomery> And that is, they're the things that we don't think about.

00:24:44.600 --> 00:24:50.540
<Tricia Montgomery> You know, the things we don't that can lead, you know, or the plastics that come in.

00:24:50.560 --> 00:24:55.720
<Tricia Montgomery> Because think about those little giblets that come out when our pets may be chewing on those microplastics.

00:24:56.320 --> 00:24:58.660
<Tricia Montgomery> If they ingest those, are they toxic?

00:24:58.900 --> 00:25:00.320
<Tricia Montgomery> Are those causing cancer?

00:25:00.640 --> 00:25:07.640
<Tricia Montgomery> How important it is to even know not only the food, but what about the things that they're chewing on from the toxicity standpoint?

00:25:08.200 --> 00:25:20.660
<Arden Moore> You know, it's like stop, watch, assess, because some things we just take for granted may be contributing to a chance of that pet getting cancer.

00:25:20.680 --> 00:25:22.740
<Arden Moore> That's pretty vital to share on this.

00:25:23.160 --> 00:25:26.480
<Arden Moore> And, you know, I have a nine-year-old dog, Kona.

00:25:26.800 --> 00:25:28.080
<Arden Moore> She's a terrier mix.

00:25:28.340 --> 00:25:31.900
<Arden Moore> She works her heart out as a safety dog and she's a therapy dog.

00:25:32.960 --> 00:25:42.600
<Arden Moore> And I'm just telling you that I make sure she gets a big test, but I'm going to make sure she gets that blood test because she's my moose.

00:25:43.280 --> 00:25:43.880
<Tricia Montgomery> Please do.

00:25:44.220 --> 00:25:44.840
<Tricia Montgomery> Please do.

00:25:45.240 --> 00:25:50.140
<Tricia Montgomery> I think that the more that we can educate people on the early detection of pan cancer, that is the goal.

00:25:50.160 --> 00:25:52.280
<Tricia Montgomery> That is the mission of Moose's March.

00:25:52.300 --> 00:25:58.580
<Tricia Montgomery> You know, there are many, many beautiful organizations out there from the Morris Animal Foundation and others.

00:25:58.840 --> 00:26:03.760
<Tricia Montgomery> Live like woo, giving the shout out to those because they are important for cancer as well.

00:26:03.920 --> 00:26:19.340
<Tricia Montgomery> But we are dedicated solely to the early detection of pet cancer and supporting animal shelters and animal welfare organizations across the country and really giving the message of education and awareness for the early detection of pet cancer.

00:26:19.360 --> 00:26:20.000
<Tricia Montgomery> Get them tested.

00:26:20.700 --> 00:26:21.180
<Arden Moore> Excellent.

00:26:21.180 --> 00:26:23.660
<Arden Moore> Hey, we're speaking with Tricia Montgomery.

00:26:23.960 --> 00:26:25.920
<Arden Moore> She is the founder of Moose's March.
