Joey Wahler

Growing up in Brooklyn, Joey Wahler was intrigued by broadcasters like Mets announcer Lindsey Nelson. "During games, he'd pitch the new Mets yearbook, which he'd say had photos 'Suitable for framing,'" Wahler remembers. "Made me wonder: are any photos unsuitable for framing?" At Seton Hall, Wahler called basketball games on radio as the program rose to national prominence. During college, Madison Square Garden Network named him the best basketball announcer on local college radio, and he called a quarter of a Knicks game live on WFAN with Walt Frazier. "The Knicks announcer, the late Jim Karvellas, wondered, 'Who's this punk sitting here?'" Wahler recalls.

For four years, Wahler worked at MSG Network, where his reporting was twice nominated for a New York Emmy Award. He anchored SportsDesk, then carved his niche as features reporter for SportsDesk and Angles, hosted by Al Trautwig. At News 12 New Jersey, the state's 24-hour cable news channel, Wahler covers the Giants, Nets, Devils and local colleges, and generates features. During the 2004 Knicks-Nets playoff series, when Tim Thomas was elbowed and threatened retaliation, Wahler asked Kenyon Martin if he thought the threat was real. The Net forward angrily replied, "If?...If?...If?...What if this @#^&%$#* building fell down?" Wahler says, "Another case of me bringing out the best in people."

Wahler is a part time sports anchor on WFAN. A passionate writer, his column, "Goin' Deep," brings unique local stories to SNY.tv, the website of SportsNet New York, the Mets cable network. Formerly the voice of Rider University basketball, Wahler calls basketball games for Long Island University of the Northeast Conference. In 2006-2007, Wahler called a full slate of college basketball games heard nationally on CBS Radio/Westwood One, including the Pac 10 Championship and the NCAA Tournament. He called Virginia Commonwealth's upset of Duke, and Butler's upset of Maryland, when his final call was, "The Butler did it! The Twerps upset the Terps!" FAN hosts Joe Benigno and Evan Roberts had Wahler on their show, analyzing the call. "Obviously a slow sports day," Wahler says.

In July of 2007, Wahler did updates during WFAN's 20th anniversary weekend, working with the likes of Suzyn Waldman, Bill Mazer and Ian Eagle. "I know what they were thinking," Wahler says. "'Who's this punk sitting here?" So my career has come full circle."
